ISBN: 1250123569
Title: The Six of Crows Duology Boxed Set Pdf Six of Crows and Crooked Kingdom

Praise for Six of Crows:"Pages of crackling dialogue and sumptuous description . . . If you’re not careful, it’ll steal all your time."―The New York Times"Harry Potter meets Game of Thrones with a dash of 19th century Europe and a caper twist.”―Los Angeles Times“If Ocean's 11 was a textbook exercise in plotting, character development and the ol' bait-and-switch reveal, then Six Of Crows is a thesis on how these lessons can be deployed in genre fiction.”―NPR."[Six of Crows] is a masterfully plotted, multiple-P.O.V. heist tale. Each of the six characters central to the narrative are from “desperate situations” fleshed out by Bardugo’s richly told backstories, and take on a crazy risky quest."―Vanity Fair“Utterly, extremely bewitching.”―The Guardian"This has all the right elements to keep readers enthralled: a cunning leader with a plan for every occasion, nigh-impossible odds, an entertainingly combative team of skilled misfits, a twisty plot, and a nerve-wracking cliffhanger."―Publishers Weekly, starred review"Cracking page-turner with a multi ethnic band of misfits with differing sexual orientations who satisfyingly, believably jell into a family."―Kirkus Reviews, starred review"Set in a world that will be familiar to fans of the author, this book can be fully enjoyed without having read any previous title. . . . This is an easy choice for teens who enjoyed The Grisha Trilogy, Diviners, or any of the Shadowhunter books."―VOYA, starred review"The whirlwind pace, along with some witty banter, burgeoning romance, and high-stakes action, makes this series opener a surefire crowd-pleaser."―BooklistLeigh Bardugo is the #1 New York Times- and USA Today-bestselling author of Six of Crows and the Grisha Trilogy: Shadow and Bone, Siege and Storm, and Ruin and Rising. She was born in Jerusalem, grew up in Los Angeles, graduated from Yale University, and has worked in advertising, journalism, and most recently, makeup and special effects. These days, she lives and writes in Hollywood where she can occasionally be heard singing with her band.

AMAZING DEFINITE BUY! Such an amazing book duology, itll make you become a hermit for a few days. Very intriguing and recommended for those who like adventure with a little romance.Must Read!! Mind is still Blown. Six of CrowsBy Leigh BardugoI gave this book a 4 out of 5 starsNo SpoilersI own the physical and the audible copySo to start off I will say this, at first I had started Six of Crows, and then had put it down to start other series, until I read the Grisha series, and it opened my eyes and I understood a bit more about the world and the Grisha’s and what they were. Once I read the Grisha Triology I was able to enjoy this book like I should have been. No idea why, I do know others needed to do the same but at the end of the day I wish I had a heads up on that. With that being said, I loved this book! I loved everything about the characters and the world and how in this series it was focused on a different part then the trilogy. Now I won’t say it is my favorite book in the world, but it is one of those that is worth reading, and probably rereading a couple more times. My favorite characters are going to be Inej and Kaz, and their chemistry with each other and those around them. This isn’t a story about some girl pinning over a guy or some tragic love story, or really a love story at all. Yes it has aspects of one in there but not over the top, its actually very subtle. It has more action and more mystery and more keep you on your toes aspects. Which makes me adore this book. I hope that she keeps this up in the second one and that we get a good final ending in Crooked Kingdom. The word play was spectacular and the story line was captivating. You honestly should pick this series up and read it! Just I recommend reading the Grisha Trilogy first.Crooked KingdomBy Leigh BardugoI gave this book a 5 out of 5 starsNo SpoilersI own the physical and the audible copyHoly Crap. *mind blown* *speechless*Bardugo has completely outdone herself with this one. It made me laugh, it very nearly made me cry, it wrapped me up in an all-consuming blanket of words and didn’t let me go until it was over with, and just left me… Speechless. This is by far my favorite book out of Six of Crows and the Grisha Trilogy. So firstly, can I just say Kaz Brekker “Dirtyhands” is a serious genius? The way that he manipulated everyone and you just never knew or expected what was going to happen next. Piece by piece, a puzzle was laid out and things that happened earlier in the book, you need to remember for later in the book, and it is like an explosion in your brain going “Oh now that makes sense!” Any questions I might have had, they were all answered. She did not leave me wanting, except that I want to know more about Kaz and Inej after the fact, like what adventures they have, what their life is like and so on. This book is a serious roller coaster of emotions. But maybe not just a roller coaster. Maybe an entire amusement park would be a more apt description. She did an amazing job with the different POVs and it wasn’t just 2 or 3 but 6 or 7. And the flow that she kept them in was just beyond words. She juggled them flawlessly and built on the already complex nature of them and just added more layers without missing a beat. There was so many emotions, so many feels that this emotional roller-coaster/amusement park/carnival has left me just like “Wow.” No matter what happens things just crescendo, between the relationships, the dark nature of some of their backgrounds, love found and ultimately lost, and dark, and almost a sexy erotic without making outright sex scenes, but keeping it entertaining with the many many personalities. The violence and the gritty nature just made this book so dark and compelling and a read like I have not had before other than A Court of Mist and Fury but with a completely different tone. It is soul crushing and mind blowing. I just cant get over it yet.I absolutely love all the action and the mischievous nature of our beloved little gang whom was fully developed and when one of them was outraged and crying it pulled on those heart strings and made you want to cry also. (Actually a friend of mine did cry) but I have to say out of my favorite characters Inej is the top of the list along with Nina, Matthias, and of course Kaz. I absolutely loved the dialogue, with all the bantering and the rapport between the characters. But at the end of the day, if you want to know if you should pick up this book. Then the answer is Yes. Dont wait, don’t keep looking through reviews you have to experience this masterpiece of amusement park/roller coaster ride for yourself. It might have finished in the perfect spot, in just the perfect way but Leigh Bardugo… I hope you read this cause How Dare You. You are evil. A brilliantly minded evil genius and I absolutely can’t wait to read yet another series/standalone book written by you.“No Mourners. No Funnerals.”A worthy finale! Wow.I don't know if I can truly capture how amazing this book was in this review, but I will do my best! To start, I listened to Six of Crows via Audible and loved it. I'd never listened to/read a book with so much action; with so many POVs that held their own; with characters that I loved! I honestly can't think of one character that I disliked. This is new for me.Where Six of Crows was intrigue and romance, Crooked Kingdom is knock-down, drag out fights and retribution. We have the same crew (Kaz, Inej, Nina, Wylan, Jesper, and Matthias), but with a different mission and the same pacing! This book is breath-taking, pulse-pounding, and gut wrenching. The ending had me in pieces; on the brink of tears. This book holds nothing back; we lose character(s) we love and find hope in their futures. We see them battling everything they've done their best to overcome; we see them fail; we see them rise above to become more.We see them give into revenge; take the high road; make smart decisions; and make even a few bad decisions. The rag tag team they were before pales in comparison with the family they've become in this book. I'm fighting tears typing this. This book was simply perfect. I wouldn't change anything about it.I just, can't express how amazing this book was. I 100% recommend it.

The Moment of Lift Pdf

ISBN: B07FCJPWST
Title: The Moment of Lift Pdf How Empowering Women Changes the World

The Moment of Lift is an urgent call to courage. It changed how I think about myself, my family, my work, and what’s possible in the world. Melinda weaves together vulnerable, brave storytelling and compelling data to make this one of those rare books that you carry in your heart and mind long after the last page.”

—Brené Brown, Ph.D., author of the New York Times #1 bestseller Dare to Lead

A debut from Melinda Gates, a timely and necessary call to action for women's empowerment.

“How can we summon a moment of lift for human beings – and especially for women? Because when you lift up women, you lift up humanity.”

For the last twenty years, Melinda Gates has been on a mission to find solutions for people with the most urgent needs, wherever they live. Throughout this journey, one thing has become increasingly clear to her: If you want to lift a society up, you need to stop keeping women down.

In this moving and compelling book, Melinda shares lessons she’s learned from the inspiring people she’s met during her work and travels around the world. As she writes in the introduction, “That is why I had to write this book—to share the stories of people who have given focus and urgency to my life. I want all of us to see ways we can lift women up where we live.”

Melinda’s unforgettable narrative is backed by startling data as she presents the issues that most need our attention—from child marriage to lack of access to contraceptives to gender inequity in the workplace. And, for the first time, she writes about her personal life and the road to equality in her own marriage. Throughout, she shows how there has never been more opportunity to change the world—and ourselves.

Writing with emotion, candor, and grace, she introduces us to remarkable women and shows the power of connecting with one another.

When we lift others up, they lift us up, too.

The Upper Level ISEE can be a very challenging test. Extra practice can make all the difference between a good score and a great score. That’s why this book has more questions than even 10 full-length exams - well over 1,500 practice questions dedicated only to the Upper Level ISEE. You won’t find any material in this book related to another test – there’s no filler here!

In this book you will find:

Two full-length tests; a diagnostic test to help you pinpoint the areas in most need of improvement, and a practice test to help familiarize students with the real thing.

• Critical skills and concepts broken out by topic, so students can zero-in on key areas.

• Questions that progress in difficulty, to help students expand their knowledge base and prepare for tough questions.

100 pages of detailed answer explanations available online at www.thetutorverse.com.

This book can be used for independent practice or for study with a professional educator. For best results, we recommend using this book with a tutor or teacher who can help students learn more about new or particularly challenging topics.

Took both tests I took the ISEE and the SSAT and I used both books. They were really helpful. I thought the ISEE was easier, but the SSAT wasn't bad. I used 3 books for the SSAT but only this one of the ISEE. It was really helpful. No score on the diagnostic test. USELESS This book starts by giving a diagnostic test, however the test does not give you an actual score, it only tells you to calculate the percentage of questions you answered correctly. This is absolutely USELESS. The books says, I quote; " the actual test will not evaluate your score based on percentage correct or incorrect. Instead it will evaluate your performance relative to all other students in your grade." This book should offer a test that gives you an indication of where you stand against everyone else, because that is the point of the ISEE, and since this book clearly cannot offer that then it is ABSOLUTELY USELESS. I wish I had read this before subjecting my child to a 2hrs40min test that ended up not giving her a clear understanding of where she stands.Five Stars Well organized and great for tutoring

Reborn In Flames Pdf

ISBN: B081J96TM3
Title: Reborn In Flames Pdf
I have spent my entire life in the basement of my father’s church. My sadistic mother and god-fearing father believe I have the devil inside of me because I heal after their abuse. I’d accepted long ago I would die in the very place I’d been born without ever feeling the sun on my skin. Then one day, my mother took me from my father’s religious cult in the wake of his death. Nearly a week later, and after countless hours with her boyfriend Jed’s creepy remarks, I find myself in Washington State. I had only ever interacted with my parents and now Jed, so you can imagine my surprise when I ran smack dab into possibly the most handsome man in the world. He’s not alone though, there are intriguing and handsome men popping up everywhere in my life.

Except I shouldn’t be focusing on that. I should be preparing for my mother’s cruel hits. Preparing to run the minute I turn 18. Preparing to hide from Jed’s leering comments and uncomfortable stares. One interaction with this man and I feel like my entire life has been altered.

Five days until I turn 18. Five days until my mother realizes what happens when you keep a bird cooped up for too long, only to open its cage. Five days until I am out of here.

My problem? Everything inside of me tells me that those intriguing men are mine… and they seem to think the same.

This is a slow/medium burn fantasy RH that features a naive but strong MFC with a troubled past and a secret about what she really is. Come meet Maya and her protective and possessive dragon shifters! This book will be part of the Reborn series.

Warnings: Please be advised that the book contains darker themes such as child abuse, PTSD, swearing, and violence. Additionally, sexual themes are suitable for mature audiences +18. This book will end on a slight cliffhanger.

I like it but I dont I like the men for the most part but feel like I don't know enough about them. What I know intrigues me except...I thought Henry being in high school to 'watch over' the twins was dumb especially when he has a supposed medical degree that he supposedly finished part time while in high school which he is too old for. Yet he is also supposedly famous in the medical field. Not possible. Illogical. Annoying. Eye rolling.Maya s thought process had me eye rolling too. She felt she had to protect them from her mom? Really? She also was way too down on herself. Not worthy of friendship? Always thinking they were going leave her? Some self doubt is ok considering her background but I found it overdone. I miss Vegas as an MC. A want a strong female lead not an illogical annoying one. Also, You can write innocent without writing the character stupid. If she read Cosmo she would have know what dating is....I did like when she stood up for herself and smacked down people who were being jerks.I will read the next one. As always, i do like the devotion this authors characters always have to each other.Loved It So far, this has been my favorite M. Sinclair book. I love how sweet Maya is and while she is naive and innocent, she isn't stupid. She is also pretty strong and just cute. So far, I like all of her mates, but I'm looking forward to learning more about them as things move really fast in this book and not a whole lot of "getting to know you" instances take place. One thing that I'm happy about is that this book doesn't end on a cliffhanger, but there are still plenty of things that can happen to move the story forward.I DIDN’T WANT IT TO ENNNNND!!! As it comes to no surprise to us all, this book is fire!! Pun freaking intended. Ugh the character development of Maya is so intense and inspiring!!

Blitzed Pdf

ISBN: B01IAS9G94
Title: Blitzed Pdf Drugs in the Third Reich
New York Times Bestseller

“[A] fascinating, engrossing, often dark history of drug use in the Third Reich.” — Washington Post

The Nazi regime preached an ideology of physical, mental, and moral purity. Yet as Norman Ohler reveals in this gripping new history, the Third Reich was saturated with drugs: cocaine, opiates, and, most of all, methamphetamines, which were consumed by everyone from factory workers to housewives to German soldiers. In fact, troops were encouraged, and in some cases ordered, to take rations of a form of crystal meth—the elevated energy and feelings of invincibility associated with the high even help to account for the breakneck invasion that sealed the fall of France in 1940, as well as other German military victories. Hitler himself became increasingly dependent on injections of a cocktail of drugs—ultimately including Eukodal, a cousin of heroin—administered by his personal doctor.

Thoroughly researched and rivetingly readable, Blitzed throws light on a history that, until now, has remained in the shadows.

“Delightfully nuts.” — The New Yorker

NORMAN OHLER is an award-winning German novelist, screenwriter, and journalist. He is the author of the novels Die Quotenmaschine (the world’s first hypertext novel), Mitte, and Stadt des Goldes (translated into English as Ponte City). He was cowriter of the script for Wim Wenders’s film Palermo Shooting. He lives in Berlin.

Riveting but too married to its own thesis This book is very well written and very well researched, and in fact proved hard to put down. Records and citations abound and the author shows his work, turning Nazis on meth from pulp fiction to frightening reality.Unfortunately the author also seems wedded to the idea that a majority of the atrocities committed by the Nazis were a result of drugs rather than aided by them, and puts all of his theories into one basket rather than considering other causes.A good read overall, but take some of the explanations with a grain of salt.A fascinating look at Hitler and the Third Reich This is one of the most fascinating books on the Third Reich and Germany that I have ever read. In light of the crises that exist in contemporary America over drugs and methamphetamines it is amazing to see that Germany was going through the same crises and even more interesting to learn that many of the drugs of abuse that are common in contemporary society were developed by the Nazis. At the center of the story is Dr. Theodor Morell - a relatively obscure and not that well credentialed doctor - who became Hitler's drug dealer/supplier. Through extensive archival research, Norman Ohler was able to discover records that show Hitler's extensive drug use/abuse and track Morell's records of the kinds of drugs that he was giving Hitler. With the drugs that Morell was giving Hitler, its amazing that he even survived as long as he did.Parallel to the story of Hitler's drug use, Ohler also shows how the Nazis used drugs to enhance the performance of soldiers. Sleep was the enemy of the soldier in battle. With drugs, the Nazis sought to win that battle and passed out "uppers" to troops on a massive scale."The fact was that between the autumn of 1941, when (Hitler) started being given hormone and steroid injections, and the second half of 1944, when first the cocaine and the above all the Eudodal kicked, Hitler hardly enjoyed a sober day." Pharmacology ruled and influenced Hitler and the outcome of the war. This book is a real page turner that gives a fascinating look into the life of Adolph Hitler and the Third Reich. Throughout the book, one wonders if history would have been different if this unknown doctor had not used his drugs on Hitler. How many lives could have been saved? What Ohler does not go into is the effect that the use of these drugs had on the hundreds of thousands of soldiers and members of the German population that used these drugs, which were available without a prescription and were widely available during much of the war. Where there long term physiological and physiological effects on those persons? That's a topic for another book and further research but it raises interesting questions.Short, useful - admittedly not professional history. This author of fiction has a breezy style and this is his first attempt at history. With that in mind, I skimmed reviews by historians before buying it. True, it is a little too cute at times, and, equally true, it is more speculative than one likes in a history book, particularly regarding whatever it was that Morell was giving Hitler and its effects (or withdrawal effects) on him as opposed to say Parkinson's. Even so, the author does flag his own speculations, and that is important. With all that out of the way, the book provides interesting material on the history of drug invention and manufacture. I had a vague idea of some of this but the comprehensive presentation improved my understanding. I also had some idea of the use of Pervitin in the German armed forces of the period, but the author makes it much more concrete, quoting from letters and other sources.Overall, the book might not be serious enough in tone for some, but from what I have read elsewhere the author has actually contributed to our understanding of an aspect of WWII and indeed war in general. If he was underequipped to undertake the task (in being a writer of fiction), he nevertheless certainly did the footwork (going to archives in the US as well as Germany).By the way, this is not the first book on this subject, but I don't know if the other book I am aware of is still in print or was ever translated into English: Nazis on Speed, by Werner Pieper. I learned of this book by reading Evans' unfavorable review of Blitzed on the Guardian website. I think Evans misreads the thrust of this book: he seems to think Blitzed lets Hitler and Germany at large off the hook. I did not get that impression myself, not at all. I do think the Evans review is a good supplement to this book, though.Maybe this book will inspire another non-historian to attempt a history book as decently researched as this.

ISBN: 0345816021
Title: 12 Rules for Life Pdf An Antidote to Chaos
Author: Jordan B. Peterson
Published Date: 2018
Page: 448

#1 NATIONAL AND INTERNATIONAL BESTSELLER “Like the best intellectual polymaths, Peterson invites his readers to embark on their own intellectual, spiritual and ideological journeys into the many topics and disciplines he touches on. It’s a counter-intuitive strategy for a population hooked on the instant gratification of ideological conformity and social media ‘likes,’ but if Peterson is right, you have nothing to lose but your own misery.” —Toronto Star“In a different intellectual league. . . . Peterson can take the most difficult ideas and make them entertaining. This may be why his YouTube videos have had 35 million views. He is fast becoming the closest that academia has to a rock star.” —The Observer“Grow up and man up is the message from this rock-star psychologist. . . . [A] hardline self-help manual of self-reliance, good behaviour, self-betterment and individualism that probably reflects his childhood in rural Canada in the 1960s. As with all self-help manuals, there’s always a kernel of truth. Formerly a Harvard professor, now at the University of Toronto, Peterson retains that whiff of cowboy philosophy—one essay is a homily on doing one thing every day to improve yourself. Another, on bringing up little children to behave, is excellent…. [Peterson] twirls ideas around like a magician.” —Melanie Reid, The Times“You don’t have to agree with [Peterson’s politics] to like this book for, once you discard the self-help label, it becomes fascinating. Peterson is brilliant on many subjects. . . . So what we have here is a baggy, aggressive, in-your-face, get-real book that, ultimately, is an attempt to lead us back to what Peterson sees as the true, the beautiful and the good—i.e. God. In the highest possible sense of the term, I suppose it is a self-help book. . . . Either way, it’s a rocky read, but nobody ever said God was easy.” —Bryan Appleyard, The Times“One of the most eclectic and stimulating public intellectuals at large today, fearless and impassioned.” —The Guardian“Someone with not only humanity and humour, but serious depth and substance. . . . Peterson has a truly cosmopolitan and omnivorous intellect, but one that recognizes that things need grounding in a home if they are ever going to be meaningfully grasped. . . . As well as being funny, there is a burning sincerity to the man which only the most withered cynic could suspect.” —The Spectator“Peterson has become a kind of secular prophet who, in an era of lobotomized conformism, thinks out of the box. . . . His message is overwhelmingly vital.” —Melanie Philips, The Times JORDAN B. PETERSON, raised and toughened in the frigid wastelands of Northern Alberta, has flown a hammer-head roll in a carbon-fiber stunt-plane, explored an Arizona meteorite crater with astronauts, and built a Kwagu'l ceremonial bighouse on the upper floor of his Toronto home after being invited into and named by that Canadian First Nation. He's taught mythology to lawyers, doctors and business people, consulted for the UN Secretary General, helped his clinical clients manage depression, obsessive-compulsive disorder, anxiety, and schizophrenia, served as an adviser to senior partners of major Canadian law firms, and lectured extensively in North America and Europe. With his students and colleagues at Harvard and the University of Toronto, Dr. Peterson has published over a hundred scientific papers, transforming the modern understanding of personality, while his book Maps of Meaning: The Architecture of Belief revolutionized the psychology of religion. What does everyone in the modern world need to know? Renowned psychologist Jordan B. Peterson's answer to this most difficult of questions uniquely combines the hard-won truths of ancient tradition with the stunning revelations of cutting-edge scientific research.

Humorous, surprising and informative, Dr. Peterson tells us why skateboarding boys and girls must be left alone, what terrible fate awaits those who criticize too easily, and why you should always pet a cat when you meet one on the street.
What does the nervous system of the lowly lobster have to tell us about standing up straight (with our shoulders back) and about success in life? Why did ancient Egyptians worship the capacity to pay careful attention as the highest of gods? What dreadful paths do people tread when they become resentful, arrogant and vengeful? Dr. Peterson journeys broadly, discussing discipline, freedom, adventure and responsibility, distilling the world's wisdom into 12 practical and profound rules for life. 12 Rules for Life shatters the modern commonplaces of science, faith and human nature, while transforming and ennobling the mind and spirit of its readers.

Way too religious! As the headline states, "way too religious." And I couldn't read past the author's assertion that order is associated with masculinity and chaos is associated with the feminine. Nope. Not wasting my time on this... Sorry I paid for this book. This book = 12 Rules (rock solid advice) + Peterson's Philosophic musings Jordan Peterson is a beacon of light in this chaotic world, a psychologist whose writing combines science and common sense. One of his talents is his ability to articulate complex ideas to a wide audience. Regardless of whether you have a background in psychology or not, you will understand this book. It covers his twelve rules for life, which are intended not only as a guide for life of the individual, but as a remedy for society’s present ills. Peterson believes that the cure for society starts with curing the individual, the smallest unit of society. Peterson’s well-known advice to clean your room is a reflection of the truth that if you can’t even manage the most basic and mundane responsibilities of life, then you have no business dictating to others how to fix society. One of the main themes of this book is: Personal change is possible. There's no doubt you can be slightly better today than you were yesterday. Because of Pareto's Principle (small changes can have disproportionately large results), this movement towards the good increases massively, and this upward trajectory can take your life out of hell more rapidly than you could believe. Life is tragic and full of suffering and malevolence. But there's something you can start putting right, and we can't imagine what good things are in store for us if we just fix the things that are within our power to do so.The 12 Rules for Life:In Peterson’s own words, it’s 12 rules to stop you from being pathetic, written from the perspective of someone who himself tried to stop being pathetic and is still working on it. Peterson is open about his struggles and shortcomings, unlike many authors who only reveal a carefully curated façade.Rule 1: Stand up straight with your shoulders back. People have bad posture, and the meaning behind it can be demonstrated by animal behaviors. Peterson uses the example of the lobster. When a lobster loses a fight, and they fight all the time, it scrunches up a little. Lobsters run on serotonin and when he loses, levels go down, and when he wins, levels go up and he stretches out and is confident. Who cares? We evolutionarily diverged from lobsters 350 million years ago, but it’s still the same circuit. It’s a deep instinct to size others up when looking at them to see where they fit in the social hierarchy. If your serotonin levels fall, you get depressed and crunch forward and you’re inviting more oppression from predator personalities and can get stuck in a loop. Fixing our posture is part of the psycho-physiological loop that can help you get started back up again.Rule 2: Treat yourself like someone you are responsible for helping. People often have self-contempt whether they realize it or not. Imagine someone you love and treat well. You need to treat yourself with the same respect. Take care of yourself, your room, your things, and have respect for yourself as if you’re a person with potential and is important to the people around you. If you make a pattern of bad mistakes, your life gets worse, not just for you, but for the people around you. All your actions echo in ways that cannot be imagined. Think of Stalin’s mother and the mistakes she made in life, and how the ripple effects went on to affect the millions of people around him.Rule 3: Choose your friends carefully. It is appropriate for you to evaluate your social surroundings and eliminate those who are hurting you. You have no ethical obligation to associate with people who are making your life worse. In fact, you are obligated to disassociate with people who are trying to destroy the structure of being, your being, society’s being. It’s not cruel, it’s sending a message that some behaviors are not to be tolerated.Rule 4: Compare yourself to who you were yesterday, not to who someone else is today. You need to improve, and you may even be in real bad shape, but many unfairly compare themselves to some more seemingly successful person. Up till around age 17, random comparisons to other people can make sense, but afterwards, especially age 30+, our lives become so idiosyncratic that comparisons with others become meaningless and unhelpful. You only see a slice of their life, a public facet, and are blind to the problems they conceal.Rule 5: Don't let children do things that make you dislike them. You aren't as nice as you think, and you will unconsciously take revenge on them. You are massively more powerful than your children, and have the ability and subconscious proclivity for tyranny deeply rooted within you.If you don't think this is true, you don't know yourself well enough. His advice on disciplinary procedure: (1) limit the rules. (2) use minimum necessary force and (3) parents should come in pairs. It's difficult and exhausting to raise children, and it's easy to make mistakes. A bad day at work, fatigue, hunger, stress, etc, can make you unreasonable.Rule 6: Set your house in perfect order before you criticize the world. Life is tragic and there's malevolence. There's plenty to complain about, but if you dwell on it, you will become bitter and tread down a path that will take you to twisted places. The diaries of the Columbine killers are a chilling look into minds that dwelled on the unholy trinity of deceit, arrogance, and resentment) . So instead of cursing the tragedy that is life, transform into something meaningful. Start by stop doing something, anything, that you know to be wrong. Everyday you have choices in front of you. Stop doing and saying things that make you weak and ashamed. Do only those things that you would proudly talk about in public.Rule 7: Pursue what is meaningful (not what is expedient). Meaning is how you protect yourself against the suffering that life entails. This means that despite the fact that we’re all emotionally wounded by life, we’ve found something that makes it all worthwhile. Meaning, Peterson says, is like an instinct, or a form of vision. It lets you know when you’re in the right place, and he says that the right place is midway between chaos and order. If you stay firmly ensconced within order, things you understand, then you can’t grow. If you stay within chaos, then you’re lost. Expediency is what you do to get yourself out of trouble here and now, but it comes at the cost of sacrificing the future for the present. So instead of doing what gets you off the hook today, aim high. Look around you and see what you can make better. Make it better. As you gain knowledge, consciously remain humble and avoid arrogance that can stealthily creep on you. Peterson also says to be aware of our shortcomings, whatever they may be; our secret resentments, hatred, cowardice, and other failings. Be slow to accuse others because we too conceal malevolent impulses, and certainly before we attempt to fix the world.Rule 8: Tell the truth—or, at least, don't lie. Telling the truth can be hard in the sense that it’s often difficult to know the truth. However, we can know when we’re lying. Telling lies makes you weak. You can feel it, and others can sense it too. Meaning, according to Peterson, is associated with truth, and lying is the antithesis of meaning. Lying disassociates you with meaning, and thus reality itself. You might get away with lying for a short while, but only a short time. In Peterson’s words “It was the great and the small lies of the Nazi and Communist states that produced the deaths of millions of people.”Rule 9: Assume that the person you are listening to might know something you don't. A good conversation consists of you coming out wiser than you went into it. An example is when you get into an argument with your significant other, you want to win, especially if you get angry. If you’re more verbally fluent than the other person then you can win. One problem is that the other person might see something better than you, but they can’t quite articulate it as well. Always listen because there’s a possibility they’re going to tell you something that will prevent you from running headfirst into a brick wall. This is why Peterson says to listen to your enemies. They will lie about you, but they will also say true things about yourself that your friends won’t. Separate the wheat from the chaff and make your life better.Rule 10: Be Precise in Your Speech: There is some integral connection between communication and reality (or structures of belief as he likes to say). Language takes chaos and makes it into a ‘thing.’ As an example, imagine going through a rough patch in your life where you can’t quite put your finger on what’s wrong. This mysterious thing that’s bothering you—is it real? Yes, if it’s manifesting itself as physical discomfort. Then you talk about it and give it a name, and then this fuzzy, abstract thing turns into a specific thing. Once named, you can now do something about it. The unnameable is far more terrifying than the nameable. As an example, the movie the Blair Witch project didn’t actually name or describe the evil. Nothing happens in the movie, it’s all about the unnameable. If you can’t name something, it means it’s so terrifying to you that you can’t even think about it, and that makes you weaker. This is why Peterson is such a free speech advocate. He wants to bring things out of the realm of the unspeakable. Words have a creative power and you don’t want to create more mark and darkness by imprecise speech.Rule 11: Don’t bother children when they are skateboarding. This is mainly about masculinity. Peterson remembers seeing children doing all kinds of crazy stunts on skateboards and handrails, and believes this is an essential ingredient to develop masculinity, to try to develop competence and face danger. Jordan Peterson considers the act of sliding down a handrail to be brave and perhaps stupid as well, but overall positive. A lot of rebellious behavior in school is often called ‘toxic masculinity,’ but Peterson would say to let them be. An example would be a figure skater that makes a 9.9 on her performance, essentially perfect. Then the next skater that follows her seems to have no hope. But she pushes herself closer to chaos, beyond her competence, and when successful, inspires awe. Judges award her 10’s. She’s gone beyond perfection into the unknown and ennobled herself as well as humanity as well.Rule 12: Pet a cat when you encounter one on the street. This chapter is mainly autobiographical and he writes about tragedy and pain. When tragic things are in front of you and you’re somewhat powerless, you must keep your eyes open for little opportunities that highlight the redemptive elements of life that make it all worthwhile. The title of this chapter comes from his experience of observing a local stray cat, and watching it adapt to the rough circumstances around it. Another thing you must do when life is going to pieces is to shorten your temporal horizon. Instead of thinking in months, you maybe think in hours or minutes instead. You try to just have the best next minute or hour that you can. You shrink the time frame until you can handle it, this is how you adjust to the catastrophe. You try to stay on your feet and think. Although this chapters deals about harsh things, it’s an overall positive one. Always look for what’s meaningful and soul-sustaining even when you’re where you’d rather not be.
