A book for everyone to read The author wrote about Fred Rogers in a way we could all not just understand but inspire to even just a tiny bit use his teachings as a lesson for us in our lives. Mister Rogers is a true hero .Summary: Half biography, half inspirational insights into how to learn from Mister Rogers. I am not unfamiliar with Mister Rogers' story. In addition to regularly watching old episodes of his TV show with my four and six-year-old, I have read four books by or about in over the past couple of years and watch several documentaries. But in spite of the familiarity, I continue to want to pick up books about him because, as the subtitle suggests, Mister Rogers continues to matter.The full biography, The Good Neighbor, released last year, gave the most complete picture of Mister Rogers’ full life, but it was not perfect. There is room for more biographies. Kindness and Wonder did not attempt to duplicate the work of The Good Neighbor. Still, even in the short length of the biographical section, Kindness and Wonder included details I had not heard before, and I went a bit deeper into some aspects of his life than The Good Neighbor did.Kindness and Wonder engaged Fred Rogers’ Christianity well. Mister Rogers would not have been the same Mister Rogers without his faith and that comes through clearly in the second section. The second section has ten lessons we should learn about Mister Rogers. This is the type of cultural engagement that I would like Christians to do better. It is not merely ‘do better’ advice or self-help, but attempting to prod the readers toward selfless maturity. Some lessons impacted me more than others.This quote from the chapter ‘Be Deep and Simple” I think is an excellent example of the lessons offered.Consider this passage by Fred Rogers: “How our words are understood doesn’t depend just on how we express our ideas. It also depends on how someone receives what we’re saying. I think the most important part about communicating is the listening we do beforehand. When we can truly respect what someone brings to what we’re offering, it makes the communication all the more meaningful.”And then just a page or so laterIn the 1970s, Hallmark invited Mister Rogers to design a Christmas display for its flagship Manhattan store. Other celebrities also contributed elaborate Christmas set pieces, what one observer called “phantasmagorical decorations.” Mister Rogers’ offering didn’t sparkle or spin or blink. It was a small Norfolk Island pine tree, planted in a transparent box so that its roots would be visible, and completely devoid of any decorations or ornaments. The display had a plaque with a message that was simple but deep: “I like you just the way you are.”There has been real push back against Mister Rogers' radical acceptance of people. More than several people have blamed the rise of narcism on Mister Rogers. But you cannot separate the first quote from the second. Mister Rogers adopted particular people to love well. He accepted them as they were. But he also assumed that others, when loved well, would love others around them well too.The story related here and other places from Franc Clemmons (Officer Clemmons), I think, is an example of that radical love.On one of his visits back to Pittsburgh, circa 1970, Clemmons was standing in the WQED studios, watching Mister Rogers film the end of an episode, saying, “I like you just the way you are, and you make every day a special day just by being you.” Clemmons said, “I was standing on the other side of the studio, but I swear he was looking into my soul. And I stood there and I looked and I looked and he kept looking at me.” When Mister Rogers had finished his take and stepped away from the camera, Clemmons walked up to him and asked, “Fred, were you talking to me?” The answer: “Franc, I’ve been talking to you for two years. You finally heard me today.”Kindness and Wonder is not hagiography. There are weakness shown. But this is the story of a man that was good in very many ways. And I think the point of the subtitle is made; we do need truly good people more than ever.Required Reading For this Moment in Time I highly recommend getting a copy of this book. The portrait of this amazing man is the best that I have read in a while. There is wisdom throughout the entire book; many gems to keep in your pocket.

Once I read the Grisha Triology I was able to enjoy this book like I should have been. No idea why, I do know others needed to do the same but at the end of the day I wish I had a heads up on that.With that being said, I loved this book! I loved everything about the characters and the world and how in this series it was focused on a different part then the trilogy. Now I won’t say it is my favorite book in the world, but it is one of those that is worth reading, and probably rereading a couple more times. My favorite characters are going to be Inej and Kaz, and their chemistry with each other and those around them. This isn’t a story about some girl pinning over a guy or some tragic love story, or really a love story at all. Yes it has aspects of one in there but not over the top, its actually very subtle. It has more action and more mystery and more keep you on your toes aspects. Which makes me adore this book. I hope that she keeps this up in the second one and that we get a good final ending in Crooked Kingdom. The word play was spectacular and the story line was captivating. You honestly should pick this series up and read it! It made me laugh, it very nearly made me cry, it wrapped me up in an all-consuming blanket of words and didn’t let me go until it was over with, and just left me… Speechless. This is by far my favorite book out of Six of Crows and the Grisha Trilogy.So firstly, can I just say Kaz Brekker “Dirtyhands” is a serious genius? The way that he manipulated everyone and you just never knew or expected what was going to happen next. Piece by piece, a puzzle was laid out and things that happened earlier in the book, you need to remember for later in the book, and it is like an explosion in your brain going “Oh now that makes sense!” Any questions I might have had, they were all answered. She did not leave me wanting, except that I want to know more about Kaz and Inej after the fact, like what adventures they have, what their life is like and so on. This book is a serious roller coaster of emotions. But maybe not just a roller coaster. Maybe an entire amusement park would be a more apt description.She did an amazing job with the different POVs and it wasn’t just 2 or 3 but 6 or 7. And the flow that she kept them in was just beyond words. She juggled them flawlessly and built on the already complex nature of them and just added more layers without missing a beat. There was so many emotions, so many feels that this emotional roller-coaster/amusement park/carnival has left me just like “Wow.” No matter what happens things just crescendo, between the relationships, the dark nature of some of their backgrounds, love found and ultimately lost, and dark, and almost a sexy erotic without making outright sex scenes, but keeping it entertaining with the many many personalities. The violence and the gritty nature just made this book so dark and compelling and a read like I have not had before other than A Court of Mist and Fury but with a completely different tone. It is soul crushing and mind blowing. I just cant get over it yet.I absolutely love all the action and the mischievous nature of our beloved little gang whom was fully developed and when one of them was outraged and crying it pulled on those heart strings and made you want to cry also. (Actually a friend of mine did cry) but I have to say out of my favorite characters Inej is the top of the list along with Nina, Matthias, and of course Kaz. I absolutely loved the dialogue, with all the bantering and the rapport between the characters.But at the end of the day, if you want to know if you should pick up this book. Then the answer is Yes. Dont wait, don’t keep looking through reviews you have to experience this masterpiece of amusement park/roller coaster ride for yourself. It might have finished in the perfect spot, in just the perfect way but Leigh Bardugo… I hope you read this cause How Dare You. You are evil. The ending had me in pieces; on the brink of tears. This book holds nothing back; we lose character(s) we love and find hope in their futures. We see them battling everything they've done their best to overcome; we see them fail; we see them rise above to become more.We see them give into revenge; take the high road; make smart decisions; and make even a few bad decisions. The rag tag team they were before pales in comparison with the family they've become in this book. I'm fighting tears typing this. This book was simply perfect. I wouldn't change anything about it.I just, can't express how amazing this book was. I 100% recommend it.

Took both tests I took the ISEE and the SSAT and I used both books. They were really helpful. I thought the ISEE was easier, but the SSAT wasn't bad. I used 3 books for the SSAT but only this one of the ISEE. It was really helpful.No score on the diagnostic test. USELESS This book starts by giving a diagnostic test, however the test does not give you an actual score, it only tells you to calculate the percentage of questions you answered correctly. This is absolutely USELESS. The books says, I quote; " the actual test will not evaluate your score based on percentage correct or incorrect. Instead it will evaluate your performance relative to all other students in your grade." This book should offer a test that gives you an indication of where you stand against everyone else, because that is the point of the ISEE, and since this book clearly cannot offer that then it is ABSOLUTELY USELESS. I wish I had read this before subjecting my child to a 2hrs40min test that ended up not giving her a clear understanding of where she stands.Five Stars Well organized and great for tutoring

I like it but I dont I like the men for the most part but feel like I don't know enough about them. What I know intrigues me except...I thought Henry being in high school to 'watch over' the twins was dumb especially when he has a supposed medical degree that he supposedly finished part time while in high school which he is too old for. Yet he is also supposedly famous in the medical field. Not possible. Illogical. Annoying. Eye rolling.Maya s thought process had me eye rolling too. She felt she had to protect them from her mom? Really? She also was way too down on herself. Not worthy of friendship? Always thinking they were going leave her? Some self doubt is ok considering her background but I found it overdone. I miss Vegas as an MC. A want a strong female lead not an illogical annoying one. Also, You can write innocent without writing the character stupid. If she read Cosmo she would have know what dating is....I did like when she stood up for herself and smacked down people who were being jerks.I will read the next one. As always, i do like the devotion this authors characters always have to each other.Loved It So far, this has been my favorite M. Sinclair book. I love how sweet Maya is and while she is naive and innocent, she isn't stupid. She is also pretty strong and just cute. So far, I like all of her mates, but I'm looking forward to learning more about them as things move really fast in this book and not a whole lot of "getting to know you" instances take place.One thing that I'm happy about is that this book doesn't end on a cliffhanger, but there are still plenty of things that can happen to move the story forward.I DIDN’T WANT IT TO ENNNNND!!! As it comes to no surprise to us all, this book is fire!! Pun freaking intended. Ugh the character development of Maya is so intense and inspiring!!

Riveting but too married to its own thesis This book is very well written and very well researched, and in fact proved hard to put down. Records and citations abound and the author shows his work, turning Nazis on meth from pulp fiction to frightening reality.Unfortunately the author also seems wedded to the idea that a majority of the atrocities committed by the Nazis were a result of drugs rather than aided by them, and puts all of his theories into one basket rather than considering other causes.A good read overall, but take some of the explanations with a grain of salt.A fascinating look at Hitler and the Third Reich This is one of the most fascinating books on the Third Reich and Germany that I have ever read. In light of the crises that exist in contemporary America over drugs and methamphetamines it is amazing to see that Germany was going through the same crises and even more interesting to learn that many of the drugs of abuse that are common in contemporary society were developed by the Nazis.At the center of the story is Dr. Theodor Morell - a relatively obscure and not that well credentialed doctor - who became Hitler's drug dealer/supplier. Through extensive archival research, Norman Ohler was able to discover records that show Hitler's extensive drug use/abuse and track Morell's records of the kinds of drugs that he was giving Hitler. With the drugs that Morell was giving Hitler, its amazing that he even survived as long as he did.Parallel to the story of Hitler's drug use, Ohler also shows how the Nazis used drugs to enhance the performance of soldiers. Sleep was the enemy of the soldier in battle. With drugs, the Nazis sought to win that battle and passed out "uppers" to troops on a massive scale."The fact was that between the autumn of 1941, when (Hitler) started being given hormone and steroid injections, and the second half of 1944, when first the cocaine and the above all the Eudodal kicked, Hitler hardly enjoyed a sober day." Pharmacology ruled and influenced Hitler and the outcome of the war.This book is a real page turner that gives a fascinating look into the life of Adolph Hitler and the Third Reich. Throughout the book, one wonders if history would have been different if this unknown doctor had not used his drugs on Hitler. How many lives could have been saved? What Ohler does not go into is the effect that the use of these drugs had on the hundreds of thousands of soldiers and members of the German population that used these drugs, which were available without a prescription and were widely available during much of the war. Where there long term physiological and physiological effects on those persons? That's a topic for another book and further research but it raises interesting questions.Short, useful - admittedly not professional history. This author of fiction has a breezy style and this is his first attempt at history. With that in mind, I skimmed reviews by historians before buying it. True, it is a little too cute at times, and, equally true, it is more speculative than one likes in a history book, particularly regarding whatever it was that Morell was giving Hitler and its effects (or withdrawal effects) on him as opposed to say Parkinson's. Even so, the author does flag his own speculations, and that is important.With all that out of the way, the book provides interesting material on the history of drug invention and manufacture. I had a vague idea of some of this but the comprehensive presentation improved my understanding. I also had some idea of the use of Pervitin in the German armed forces of the period, but the author makes it much more concrete, quoting from letters and other sources.Overall, the book might not be serious enough in tone for some, but from what I have read elsewhere the author has actually contributed to our understanding of an aspect of WWII and indeed war in general. If he was underequipped to undertake the task (in being a writer of fiction), he nevertheless certainly did the footwork (going to archives in the US as well as Germany).By the way, this is not the first book on this subject, but I don't know if the other book I am aware of is still in print or was ever translated into English: Nazis on Speed, by Werner Pieper. I learned of this book by reading Evans' unfavorable review of Blitzed on the Guardian website. I think Evans misreads the thrust of this book: he seems to think Blitzed lets Hitler and Germany at large off the hook. I did not get that impression myself, not at all. I do think the Evans review is a good supplement to this book, though.Maybe this book will inspire another non-historian to attempt a history book as decently researched as this.
